Abstract
Numerous investigations have focused on what statistical features can be used to characterize burst arrivals. In ISDN[1] and VBR[2] packet traffic the probability density functions (pdf) of the interarrival time and scene-length respectively asymptotically decay as t-λ. The heavy tailed pdfs suggest high variance in the arrival process. High variance and long-range dependence can also be the result of clustered packet arrivals. Such clusters can have a significant impact on multiplexing and performance of high speed networks[3,4]. Consequently, methods for detecting and characterizing such events are needed. Recently it has been shown that the bursts can be adequately modeled using a chaotic model and self similar model for the packet run-length[5,6].
