Abstract
In the twentieth century industrialization significantly added to the advantages of coastal areas for the location of human activities. This resulted in a concentration of human activities and urbanization of coastal areas. In the last decades development in these areas has intensified as a result of the boom of the tourist industry. These growing demands on coastal resources place serious threats for coastal areas as evidenced by a progressive deterioration of the coastal environment (Coccossis, 1985, p.21).
