Serum Tryptophan, Kynurenine, and Neopterin in Patients with Guillain-Barre-Syndrome (GBS) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Abstract

GBS is a multifocal inflammation of peripheral nerves followed by demyelination as well as lymphocyte and macrophage cell infiltration throughout the peripheral nervous system (Donaghy, 1993, Murray, 1993). MS is a demyelinating disease, specific to the central nervous system. The lesion is located in the white matter of the brain and spinal cord followed by the degeneration of oligodendroglia and perivascular and periadventitial infiltration with mononuclear cells/lymphocytes/ (Ebers, 1995). The etiology of GBS as well as that of MS is unclear, however, pathogenesis can be connected with viral infection or with immunization (Ramsohoff et al.,1994, Hartung et al., 1992, McFarlin, 1990, Stoll et al., 1993).
