Abstract
The discharge of produced water rapidly increases as an oil field ages, eventually reaching a level where the production of injection and formation water exceeds the production of oil. The processing capacity of water and gas is normally the limiting factor for a mature oil field (Ynnesdal and Furuholt, 1994). The composition of produced water includes dissolved salts, dissolved and colloidal hydrocarbons, trace metals, residual chemicals added in the petroleum production processes and suspended solids.
