Abstract
Successful treatment of substance abuse nearly always requires a team approach. The family physician is in a key position to identify abusers and guide them into treatment. Rarely do patients seek out a physician because of substance abuse problems. It is usually identified when evaluating patients for other problems (e.g., ulcer, insomnia, accidents, abuse). Identifying substance abuse is challenging. Family physicians may also make valuable contributions to treatment as the patient and family progress.
