Abstract
The rapid advancement of information technology (IT) is transforming the world economy into an information economy. Just as capital and energy replaced land and labor two centuries ago, codified information and knowledge are now replacing capital and energy as the primary wealth-creating assets. This gradual shift has changed the nature of human work. Laborers of the twentieth century who used and transformed physical resources are being replaced by “knowledge workers” skilled in interpreting and transforming information. The emerging information economy is growing two and a half times faster than the goods economy, and although the IT workforce is growing six times faster than the total workforce, the demand for skilled IT professionals far exceeds supply.
