Abstract
For the past three decades, individuals and organizations that conduct clinical trials have struggled to increase patient enrollment. As the number of patients required for the average clinical trial has increased, recruitment has become the primary obstacle to fast, efficient trial completion, consuming close to 30% of clinical development time. To expedite trials, we must identify the factors that complicate patient recruitment and implement solutions like improved trial design and e-enabled enrollment. In this chapter, we explore our progress to date, summarizing research on clinical trial participation and describing current efforts to solve the recruitment problem.
