Abstract
First convened in July 1998, the Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) met again in January and July of 1999 and concluded its deliberations in February 2000. With membership from across the nation and expertise in clinical trials, informatics, statistics, computer science, and medicine, the LRPC worked with the senior editor of this volume in his role as Director of the Office of Informatics (OI) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Charged with developing a vision for a new Cancer Informatics Infrastructure (CII), the LRPC prepared a report at the director’s request, advising him on what he should do in the near future to move the CII initiative forward. This report, which provides the conceptual underpinnings for this volume, follows.
