Impedance Reduction in Therapy of Power Failure of the Heart

  • Chapter
Critical Care Medicine Manual

Abstract

For the purposes of this chapter, the term “heart failure” is used to designate the level of cardiac output that is insufficient to satisfy the normal metabolic demands of the body organs and tissues at rest [12]. While the underlying pathophysiological processes in heart failure may affect primarily the right ventricle (e.g., pulmonary embolus), primarily the left ventricle (e.g., acute myocardial infarction), or both cardiac chambers to an equivalent degree, impedance reduction alters the performance of the left ventricle dominantly and the performance of the right ventricle in a secondary manner.
