In the previous chapters we have tried to stick to topics that are essential, require no mathematical background beyond the second-year graduate level, and require no physics background beyond the freshman level. This and the next chapter are primarily intended to round out our presentation somewhat by outlining some topics that fail to meet one or more of these criteria. (M, g) is a spacetime throughout this chapter.
