Abstract
This species is usually classified as a subspecies of M. montanus (Peale). However, from a number of specimens collected in Oregon, USA, the karyotypes of M. canicaudus were consistent and were different from those of M. montanus (Folio 70). The sex chromosomes of the former are biarmed, and those of the latter, acrocentric.
