Genetic Demography of Plant Populations

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Darwin (1958) remarks in his autobiography that the idea of natural selection came to him while reading for amusement Malthus’ essay on Population. Malthus’ recognition that populations tend to grow exponentially has become so ingrained in contemporary thinking that the simple statement of population growth tends to have an axiomatic character. Likewise Darwin’s insight that environmentally imposed limitations on population growth imply differential reproduction is today beyond dispute. Indeed, the very mechanism of adaptive evolution arises from environmentally mediated genotypically differential controls on population growth. Despite this fundamental connection between genetics demography despite the early pioneering work of Norton (1926), serious attempts to develop an integrated theory of genetic demography have occurred only within the past decade (e.g. Anderson and King, 1970; Charlesworth 1970, 1974; Charlesworth and Giesel, 1972; Demetrius, 1975).
