Minor Histocompatibility Systems in Dogs

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Experimental Hematology Today ((HEMATOLOGY,volume 1978))

Abstract

Over 25 percent of recipients of HLA-identical bone marrow cells die from graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) (6) and, despite maximal immunosuppression, approximately 25 percent of HLA-identical kidneys are rejected within 5 years (1,18). Recently, it has been suggested that GvHD in HLA-identical sibling donor recipient pairs is influenced by minor histocompatibility differences controlled by the sex chromosomes (7,25). However, ethical and practical limitations in the treatment of human patients prevent the proper control of many variables. A better understanding of minor histocompatibility systems is needed to increase survival in humans after transplantation.
