Abstract

A long-term bone marrow culture that allows sustained proliferation of multipotential stem cells of mice (CFU-s)1 has been useful for the study of some of the mechanisms controlling haemopoiesis.2,3,4 In this system, production of granulocytic2,3,5 and megakaryocyte6 precursor cells occurs concomitantly with stem cell proliferation. These cells, in turn, undergo proliferation and maturation to fully mature granulocytes, macrophages, and megakaryocytes.2,3,4,6 Morphologically recognizable erythroid cells are absent. However, since in vitro colony assay systems are available that permit the study of erythroid progenitors, it was of interest to determine whether such precursor cells are present in the cultures, and if so, at what stage erythropoiesis was halted.
