Approximately 7.5% of all patients admitted to the United States Army Institute of Surgical Research have injuries of the eye and/or associated structures requiring specific therapy. One-half of the ophthalmic injuries involve the eyelids and conjunctiva (Figure 6-1). Other injuries include corneal ulcers, corneal lacerations, corneal burns, globe penetration, and iridocyclitis.
