Abstract
We have now built up a moderate amount of experience in the top-down design of algorithms, the translation of these algorithms into a programming language, and the verification of the correctness of the resultant programs. The rest of the book will develop each of these themes much further, providing the reader with a variety of useful tools and a rich experience in their use. For definiteness we have chosen the programming language Pascal, but it should be clear to the reader that most of the tools we introduce are valid far beyond Pascal, even though the fine details of their use will depend on the conventions used in setting up a particular programming language.
