Abstract
The plasma torch is a poorly understood, little known prodigy among the physical modalities used in medicine. It is unknown to most physicians because it is presently an experimental tool, references in the medical literature are sparse, and it masquerades under several aliases. For example, the plasma torch has been called the plasma arc, the plasma jet, the plasma scalpel, and the arc plasma scalpel. Reasons for the variety of names will be elucidated below. The last two terms emphasize cutting ability; jet scalpel and plasma jet scalpel would be other acceptable terms. In general, considering both industrial and medical applications, we believe the term plasma torch may best describe the true nature of this device. However, when it is used to cut tissue, plasma scalpel is a more appropriate term.
