Abstract
Port Valdez is a relatively deep, narrow, glaciated reentrant in the northeastern part of Prince William Sound (Fig. 7-1). This east west trending typical U-shaped fjord is approximately 21 km long and 4.5 km wide, its shores are bordered by steep walls which extend beneath the water. Seaward the depth increases rapidly to form a high-angle slope, but farther offshore the fjord is a flat-bottomed trough with a maximum depth of about 240 m. At its mouth, the Valdez Narrows, a nearly right-angle structural constriction (about 1.5 km wide) with two sills, connects the fjord with Port Valdez Arm and Prince William Sound.
