Abstract
Prince William Sound, a semicircular basin, lies between 59°55′ and 60°58′N and 145°30′ and 148°45′W. It is bordered in the north by the Chugach Mountains and in the east by the Kenai Mountains (Fig. 6-1). The principal large basin covers an area of 3595 km2. Numerous fjords, bays and inlets extend northward from the main basin. A list of the principal water bodies is given in Table 6-1. The water characteristics in these semi-isolated elongated fjords, inlets, and bays are partly controlled by the water in Prince William Sound. Such inlets and fjords are also areas where intense mixing of sediment laden runoff and sea water occurs, and these mixed waters ultimately flow into Prince William Sound.
