Treatment of Neonatal Metabolic Acidosis

  • Chapter

Abstract

The maintenance of a normal acid-base state in the newborn infant is a challenge both to the neonate’s inherent regulatory mechanisms and to the clinician’s skill in compensating for the biochemical and physiologic consequences when these mechanisms fail. The birth process and the immediate neonatal period are frequently associated with clinical conditions that lead to an acidotic state. This chapter will address itself to a discussion of perinatal acidosis, with special emphasis on the etiology and management of metabolic acidosis in the newborn period.
