Fingertip Injuries

  • H. R. Mittelbach

The fingertips are sense organs that tell us the temperature, shape, and texture of all objects with which they come into contact. The ability for spatial comprehension, or tactile gnosis, is resident in the tips of the fingers. The nail bed, also rich in nerve end organs, and the nail, which acts as a support for the soft volar tissues, serve as mediators of cutaneous sensation. Finally, the bone forms the stable axis of the fingertip. The bone, bulb, and nail thus comprise a functional unit. Its injury or destruction may make it impossible to perform an otherwise simple act.
