Abstract

The literature of genetics repeatedly describes individual plants or insects with an extra chromosome (trisomic) or with one less chromosome (monosomic). In Drosophila melanogaster, for example, individuals with three X chromosomes have been known about for decades. Similarly, in the jimson weed Datura stramonium, trisomics were known to affect many characteristics of the plant, and trisomy for each chromosome was linked to a consistent series of morphological abnormalities. In the tobacco plant, monosomics have been used by geneticists to locate genes in a particular linkage group.
