Abstract
It has been estimated from autopsy studies and clinical investigations in defined populations that gallstones develop in 15% to 20% of all adults. The incidence of gallstones is increased in certain countries (notably the Scandinavian countries), in women (twice the incidence of men), and in older age groups.1–4 From approximately age 35 the incidence increases so that at age 75 about one of every three persons has cholelithiasis.
