The Quantitative Assessment of the Effect of Antiplatelet Drugs on Thrombosis in Microvascular Anastomoses

  • Chapter
Microsurgery for Cerebral Ischemia

Abstract

The effect of various antiplatelet drugs on the patency of micro vascular anastomoses in a laboratory model using the rat has been studied. The objectives were threefold: (1) to test the usefulness of micro vascular anastomosis as an animal model of thrombosis, as no entirely satisfactory model exists,1 (2) to develop a quantitative measure of thrombosis with which to compare the ant thrombus activity of the drugs, as considerable controversy exists on the basis of prior model experiments and clinical trials as to their efficacy,2 and (3) to determine if enhanced micro vascular patency was possible using single intravenous bolus injection of the drugs during the anastomosis procedure itself.
