Intracellular and Extracellular Changes During Early Ocular Development in the Chick Embryo

  • Chapter
Ocular Size and Shape Regulation During Development

Part of the book series: Ocular Size and Shape ((EYE))

Abstract

The study of eye development has a long history, covering several centuries. In recent years, careful descriptions of normal morphogenesis have been published for a number of species (for reviews, see Coulombre, 1965; O’Rahilly, 1975; Schook, 1978). The early events in eye development follow a similar pattern in all vertebrates. For this discussion, early development of the chick eye will be divided into three phases; initiation of the primordium, outgrowth of the primordium to form the optic vesicle and optic stalk, and invagination of the optic vesicle to produce the double-layered optic cup.
