Ureteral Injury as a Consequence of Radiation Therapy

Abstract

Twenty percent of patients with carcinoma of the cervix have some degree of ureteral obstruction prior to the institution of therapy [1]. A much higher percentage, approximately 65 to 85%, have such complications as a result of the progression of the disease process; 76% of these patients will die of renal complications [1]. The natural history of the tumor is for it to spread by direct extension into the parametrium. Invasion of the vagina inferiorly worsens the prognosis. Extension into the bladder or rectum further decreases survival and increases morbidity posttherapy.
