Mutagenicity Testing: Problems in Application

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Topics in Environmental Physiology and Medicine ((TEPHY))

Abstract

In this decade, genetic toxicology has emerged as an interdisciplinary science that aims to understand the mechanisms of action of agents that induce mutations and to appraise the human risks posed by exposure to such agents. Our research into chemical mutagenesis has shown us that some chemical types in themselves or after metabolic activation are capable of altering the informational content encoded in the base sequence of DNA. It now becomes understandable that adverse health effects in man such as carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, and teratogenesis may result from overexposure to such chemicals that alter genetic material. Thus it behooves us as scientists to use the many mutagenicity testing methods that have been developed—and are being developed—to study these genotoxic substances.
