Abstract
Over the last 75 years, studies on ascocarp development have played an increasingly important role in ascomycete taxonomy. The classic studies by Dangeard (1907), Nannfeldt (1932), Luttrell (1951, 1954), and several others are so well known and so fundamental that they are often quoted without literature citations. Although these studies have contributed greatly to an understanding of relationships among certain groups of ascomycetes, the plectomycetes or cleistothecial forms have remained relatively unstudied. The reasons for this neglect are several but stem mainly from traditional taxonomic concepts.
