Abstract

In a revised version of his paper, Professor Becker replies to two objections that were raised in my comments. The first objection was that even if having a virtuous character will dispose one to favor people over animals, it does not follow that acting according to such a preference is just, any more than it would follow that a judge is being just when he discriminates against people whom he rightly, and in keeping with a good character, regards as unbearable (say, some outrageously long winded bore who is nonetheless law abiding).
