Abstract

The title originally assigned to this paper was “The Consequences of the New Parasitology.” When contemplating the subject it occurred to us, however, that in reality there is no “new” parasitolo9,. The “old” parasitic Y diseases are still the same. Regrettably, they have not been eradicated or controlled and still exist with extremely high prevalence. Consequently, the goals of parasitological research also remain the same: development of better diagnostic methods and more efficient means for prophylaxis and cure. Fortunately, new approaches are presently available, and recent advances in molecular biology are being applied for tackling these problems, including modern technologies such as recombinant DNA, cellular hybridization and sophisticated biochemical methods.
