Abstract

Northwest African countries, from Morocco to Guinea, represent probably the group of countries for which the extension of national jurisdiction has had the most significance. While it is true that countries bordering the northern Atlantic and the northern Pacific also acquired control over fishery resources of comparable importance (in absolute terms), the present state of their economies and the other natural resources available for their development do not render fisheries as critical a factor of economic progress as they are for the Northwest African states.
