Abstract
As oceanographically oriented scientists, we can examine how, with changing naval technology, oceanographic factors have affected the ways that nations have used the sea to suit their strategic purposes. Although the technology of naval warfare has undergone major changes through the centuries, the general objectives have been relatively invariant with time. As the technology of naval warfare has changed, so has the oceanographic support needed by naval planners and operators.
