Viennese philosopher, 1880–1903, whose published doctoral dissertation, a diatribe against women and Jews, brought him instant fame. A Jew himself, he took his own life a few months later, an act praised by anti-Semitic writers as the only reasonable solution to the problems he had had the “wisdom” to recognize.
