Abstract

Biopsy procedures rarely are essential to diagnose cutaneous infections. More often, cultures or immunologic techniques identify the causative agent. However, an infectious agent either may produce pathognomonic changes in the tissue or it may be identified with either routine or special stains. When sampling a suspected infectious lesion, one also should obtain tissue for appropriate cultures.
