Abstract

Sulfur dioxide, because of its potential as a nutrient source as well as a toxic agent, influences plants and plant communities in a variety of ways. Separating the nutrient and toxic effects is difficult, because a process or structure that is impacted positively by the nutrient-supplying properties of S02 may be negatively impacted by the same concentration of S02 as exposure time is increased. A transition from positive to negative effects can also be expected over a range of S02 concentrations for the same exposure time. Odum et al. (1979) described this general phenomenon for perturbed ecological systems as a subsidy-stress gradient.
