Congenital Coxa Vara

  • Chapter

Abstract

Fiorani,30 in 1881, published the first clinical description of a lesion of the hip due to bending of the neck of the femur, after observing 15 patients, mostly children, with slight limps which had commenced soon after ambulation. Similar observations of this particular adduction bowing of the femur were reported by Muller65 in 1889. Hofmeister,42 in 1894, with a classical description of the adduction deformity, suggested the name coxa vara for this condition. Kredel,53 in 1896, was the first investigator to describe obvious congenital coxa vara, which he observed in two children also exhibiting other malformations, such as congenital pes equinovarus. As originally intended, the term coxa vara denotes a particular adduction deformity of the shaft of the femur in relation to the head and neck. Most contemporary definitions of this deformity include a decrease of the angle between the neck and shaft of the femur, designated as the angle of inclination.
