Abstract
Incompatibility is surely the scourge of the realm of interpersonal relationships. It appears with the frequency of the common cold, but unlike that nuisance, incompatibility often proves fatal to many relationships. Furthermore, those who succumb to it often enjoy neither an easy death nor a quick one. As the explanatory epitaph on the death certificates of these doomed relationships, the word “incompatibility” often fails to capture the misery, frustration, and broken dreams that were its agonizing symptoms, as well as the heroic efforts of individual will, and of therapeutic intervention, that sometimes precede the final judgment.
