Abstract

When she was eight months pregnant Marsha Smith of Abingdon, Virginia was rushed to Johnston Memorial Hospital in pain. She had not been seen by an obstetrician. There are only two obstetricians in the county and both demanded $650 in advance before they would see her or deliver her baby. She and her husband could not afford medical care.
