Abstract
The concept of using aircraft as research vessels in biological oceanography is relatively new. With recent advances in airborne remote sensor technology, it is clear that aircraft have a role distinct from, yet complementary to, that of ships, buoys, and satellites. One distinction lies in the technology itself. Measurement capabilities of airborne remote sensors generally fall between those of ships and satellites.
