Abstract

During the week of 20 June 1977 we conducted a week-long chlorophyll mapping experiment in central Long Island Sound. The objective of this experiment was to examine the horizontal distribution of chlorophyll a within the upper water column and to infer the relative importance of biological and physical processes in producing structure of different length scales. The impetus for this experiment was provided by the investigations of Platt et al. (1970), Piatt (1972), Denman and Piatt (1975) and Fasham and Pugh (1976).
