Behavior of Some Metals in Surfîcial Sediments of the Northwest Mediterranean Continental Shelf

Sediments and Water Interactions

Abstract

This contribution describes the horizontal and vertical distributions of Mn, Fe, Cd, and Cu from four sites in the northwest Mediterranean Sea. These sites are typical of different environmental conditions, and include oxidized and reduced sediments in areas of high and low sedimentation rates, with and without the influence of urban and industrial pollution. Under marine conditions, 60–80% of Cd and 30–50% of Cu could be released during sediment transport; both continued to show some release after deposition.
