Modelling Radionuclide Transport Between Lake Water and Sediments

  • Conference paper
Sediments and Water Interactions

Abstract

This contribution analyzes sediment-water interactions in a lake model previously developed to make dose commitment calculations for U238 and Th232 decay series radionuclides. The model calculates that the dominant mechanism for radionuclide removal from a lake’s water column is settling. Diffusional processes decrease net sedimentation over the long-term, because the concentration gradient is calculated to be from the sediment porewater to the overlying water.
