Abstract
This chapter will review the endocrine events associated with the restoration of cyclic ovarian function during the postpartum interval, specifically examining the duration of anovulation in nonnursing mothers and the prolongation of infertility by nursing. The majority of the physiological data have been obtained from studies of rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys housed in individual cages under environmentally controlled conditions. These laboratory studies will be compared and contrasted to data available for monkeys in confined groups and under free-ranging conditions. Finally, data for other primate species will be summarized and related to the more detailed presentations for the macaques.
