Medical Management of Cardiac Tumors

  • Chapter
Cancer and the Heart

Abstract

Techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of neoplastic involvement of the heart1-23 have been developed only recently. We now know that the heart is frequently the target of various neoplasms. Most of the primary cardiac neoplasms have been treated either surgically or with external beam radiotherapy. Metastatic cardiac tumors, on the other hand, have been treated with various combinations of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Leukemias, lymphomas, and several solid tumors in which chemotherapy has already failed at the time of the detection of cardiac involvement have mostly been managed with either radiation therapy or a combination of surgery and radiation therapy.16,17,19,22–36
