Abstract

The nature of analogical representations and analogical processes is discussed from the standpoint of two illustrative parallel processing systems. One uses a diagram as an analogical representation and the other models mental rotation as an analogical process of message passing between neighbors in a collection of locally interconnected processors. It is argued that the effectiveness of both analogical representations and analogical processes follows, in part, from the way symbolic information is coded in a form amenable to parallel processing.
