Abstract
This book emphasizes the early recognition of drinking problems, yet, physicians often first make the diagnosis of alcoholism only when the patient demonstrates signs and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. The treatment for withdrawal is only one aspect of the treatment for alcoholism. The office management of the symptoms of acute withdrawal sets the stage for long-term management of the alcoholic patient. Physical dependence on alcohol and the spectrum of withdrawal syndromes are discussed in Chapter 4.
