Abstract

Vitamin A, vitamin E, and phospholipids containing polyunsaturated fatty acids play important roles in both the structure and function of the retina, especially with regard to the photoreceptor cells (Robison et al., 1982). Deficiencies in dietary vitamin A, in forms which can be utilized as retinol, lead to night blindness, loss of photoreceptor outer segments, irreversible loss of photoreceptor nuclei, and ultimately to complete and permanent blindness (Dowling and Wald, 1958; 1960; Dowling and Gibbons, 1961; Wald, 1968; Carter-Dawson et al., 1979). The photosensitive portions (outer segments) of rod photoreceptor cells consist of densely arrayed sheets of membranes in the form of stacks of tightly packed discs which are specialized for visual transduction (Bonting et al., 1977; Rosenkranz, 1977). Approximately 90% of the protein in these membrane discs is opsin which, combined with a chromophoric group (11-cis retinaldehyde), constitutes the visual pigment, rhodopsin (Wald, 1968).
