Abstract
The overall aim of this paper is to describe a diagram classification that has been carried out with a view to suggesting the most convenient methods of storage and reproduction.
This work has been conducted in support of the British Library (BLEND) project designed to integrate text and graphics within an electronic journal.
The preliminary goal is to identify problems associated with the inclusion of graphics in an environment that uses low bandwidth communications channels. This means that the efficiency of compression and image-representation techniques is of vital importance. The particular method chosen will be dictated by the type and complexity of the diagram.
