Conference Summary

Part of the Santa Cruz Summer Workshops in Astronomy and Astrophysics book series (SANTA CRUZ)

So vast was the subject of this conference that summarizing it in a small space is very difficult, and I will be able to do no more than outline a few memorable results and perhaps synthesize a point of view or two from the overwhelming amount of material we have heard in the past two weeks. One problem was that the subject matter was never very well defined, and the workshop eventually covered essentially all of extragalactic astronomy with the possibly notable exception of active nuclei. What is a “nearly normal” galaxy? Virginia Trimble remarked a few days ago that a nearly normal person is anyone one does not know very well.
