Part of the book series: Santa Cruz Summer Workshops in Astronomy and Astrophysics ((SANTA CRUZ))

Abstract

The importance of the far infrared emission to the study of stellar populations in galaxies is that in the local universe a comparable amount of energy emerges in the far infrared as in the uv-optical region [1-2]. IRAS has now made available to us far infrared fluxes for over 20,000 galaxies.
